Private leasing of an electric car — how it works
Private leasing of an electric car is an agreement where you pay a fixed amount per month to drive a new EV for an agreed period. Most agreements run between 12 and 48 months, with the longer terms being the most common. You don't own the car — you use it, and you hand it back when the agreement ends. Unlike buying, you don't tie up money in the car, and you don't have to worry about its resale value.
The monthly payment on an EV lease usually covers the car itself and often servicing, while insurance, electricity and the green ownership tax typically come on top. The green ownership tax for an EV in 2026 is around DKK 920 per year — markedly lower than for a comparable petrol or diesel car. Since 1 April 2018, delivery costs must also be included in the advertised price, so the price you see is the price you pay.
